Gay's Character

When I was asked to write something about Gay’s character, my first thought was, “She is a character alright”. I have known Gay for about eight years now. The first day that we met, our churches were joining together to go to a youth conference. We met together at six in the morning in the church parking lot. Our mutual friend introduced us and it went something like this: “Tina, I would like you to meet someone.” She took me toward Gay and she said to her, “This is Tina Turner.” Gay’s reaction, without skipping a beat, was: “Nice to meet you, I’m the Queen of England.” Our friend looked at her and said that really my name was Tina Turner. She laughed and I laughed and we became instant friends. I love to tell that story because it is totally who Gay is. She is full of life, full of energy and full of love. Gay is the person who you can go for months without talking to and pick up right where you left off. She makes you feel like the world revolves around you when you are in her presence. You not only can laugh with her but you can cry with her and sometimes in the same conversation.
Gay is a woman of integrity and of sensitivity. She is very strong in her faith. She is someone you can share your heart with and know that she will cherish it and protect it as if it was her own. Gay has a way of telling stories that reach to the depths of your soul. She knows what to say and when to say it. She has been an amazing friend through the years and has helped me with many difficulties. When I lost my son she was there to offer the love and support that I needed when I had other “friends” telling me that I needed to move on. She is a woman that I will always consider a friend. Gay may not be the Queen of England but she is a princess in our Heavenly Kings court.

Setting out to write about who Gay is, and what her character is like, I found myself staring at a blank page for a while. "How on EARTH am I supposed to write about a woman who has impacted my life in the way that she has?" This... is what I came up with.
Gay Lynn is a woman I admire so very much. Her character shows up in all of her life, whether it's a quiet conversation being held in the youth room at 10pm after a deep youth lesson, or painting a barn in the middle of July. Everything is the same. The laughter. The concern. The joking. The advice.
Gay has a personality that she can relate to almost anyone. And she does! Working with our youth group in the way she does, she is completely comfortable with leg wrestling at 2 am as she is addressing the elders in our church. And when she hears, "Mrs. Bechtel!!!" hollered across the gym after church by a 5 year old, she is never too busy to stop and give a hug or see what they did in Junior Church.
You always know when Gay is in a room because her laughter (and voice!) fills the whole place! Whether it's 500 people or 5. Gay's life and walk with God has given her a way to relate with almost every experience and person.
Gay is a dear friend. She is someone who will call and say, "What are you doing?!?!?!" and I know there's a project in store. And it will be a crazy day, filled with fun, laughter, deep talks, dance parties, and we still get stuff done. And it's a good day. She is always teaching me. To be a better wife, to be a better Christian, a better leader, and a better person.
